It is estimated that one out of five people are chronic procrastinators like Instant Gratification Monkey. There are a few behaviors that may appear to be procrastination on the surface but are actually quite different. Prioritizing is one of those. In your crazy, hectic work day, you may come in witha hundred things on a list of things to get done. If you prioritize that list and you work your list in priority order and at the end of the day you still didn’t get 50 things done, that’s not procrastinating. That’s prioritizing, that’s a healthy time management skill. Sometimes we delay action on purpose, and that’s a different thing than procrastination as well.
You can’t overcome procrastination. Just accept that you are like most people, specifically one amongst 80%-95% of students who procrastinate on a regular basis (O’Brien, 2002). You are strong enough to do anything, but in future. Not today. By postponing things to tomorrow, you can easily hang on to hope that things will be perfect tomorrow. And hope is a good thing- it makes you see that there is light tomorrow despite all the darkness today. Not just hope, it also grants you a comfortability with yourself. Once you accept that you can’t overcome it, you’ll be able to get rid of all that anxiety that you face with putting things off. And will be comfortable with your non-doer self.
How to stop procrastinating and get things done
Procrastination can be stopped completely. Surprisingly, it can be stopped with simple methods. The hard part is sticking to those methods and having the guts to succeed. Unfortunately, majority of people rarely research to find out effective ways to beat procrastination. Most people become slaves to procrastination, this leads them to abandon their dreams, to delay tasks and to become totally unreliable. Lets imagine that you have a big decision to make, but you haven’t collected quite all of the data. That’s a wise time to put off taking a certain action. Maybe you have a big project, and you’ve got a couple of months to get it done. You think it’s about time to start the project, but if you just wait another day or two, you’ll have your new computer, or new software, or more people to help you. Putting it off may actually save you time in the long run. So that’s a wise time to delay action.
Whether you realize it or not, procrastination is a big reason why you are struggling financially in life. It damages your credibility with employers and fellow colleagues at work. It also affects the quality of your work and this affects the business you or your employer receive from customers, clients, and business relationships. - Thomas Corley, Business Insider Article
